Approaches and Methods of Treatment in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Centers in Malaysia

Abstract

Substance abuse and drug addiction is a complex disease, which damages the life of an addict especially in terms of physical, mental, social and spiritual. The National Anti -Drug Agency (AADK), defines drugs as psychoactive chemicals used for non -medical purposes and it is prohibited. This study focuses on the methods of treatment in rehabilitation centers in Malaysia. This qualitative study applies the case study method by conducting observations and interviews. Data collection was obtained through the analysis of structured interviews with two officers and two center residents for each of the rehabilitation centers involved. Findings show that methods of treatment can be categorized into four main elements namely psychosocial approach, psychospiritual approach,, pharmacology and alternative approach.
