Abstract

Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are metabolites that are produced and expelled by a wide range of microorganisms, including lactic acid bacteria (LAB). EPS performs a variety of biological functions, including interactions between bacteria and their environments, protection against hostile conditions such as dehydration, alleviation of the action of toxic compounds. In this study EPS serve as a model for a new application as antibacterial agent as test practically. The EPS was extracted and purified from Lactobacillus salivarius by ethanol precipitation and Sephadex G-100 column. The crude EPS are tested against uropathogenic multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa as antibacterial agent. Two EPS concentrations were challenged against P. aeruginosa. The results revealed that almost all P. aeruginosa isolates were multidrug resistant and both concentration (32 and 64 µg/L) as Anti-Pseudomonas aeruginosa agent. As a conclusion, L. salivarius EPS is effective as anti-Pseudomonas agent and be an effective alternative to some topical antibacterial agents or as a systemic drug after in vivo study.
